Pregnant Mom With Twins Attacked by Dogs: ‘You Just Mess Somebody’s Whole Life Up’

A routine walk to a relative’s house turned into a nightmare for Audrey Suarez, who is 24 weeks pregnant with twins. On July 17 in Topeka, Kansas, Suarez was attacked by two dogs, leaving her with severe injuries including a broken pinky, a lacerated iris, and the need for 14 hours of surgeries — 10 on her face and four on her eye. Her partner, C.J. Austin, says a bystander who intervened likely saved her life. The twins are reported to be in good condition, but Suarez now suffers from nightmares about the attack.

The dog owner received only a citation, which has sparked outrage from the family. “You just mess somebody’s whole life up,” Austin said, questioning why no further charges were filed. A GoFundMe has been set up to help with Suarez’s recovery. The incident raises important questions about leash laws and owner accountability, especially in communities like ours on the Suncoast where many of us walk our dogs or enjoy time outdoors.
