A new children’s book from a Sarasota author is giving Suncoast families a concrete tool for one of the hardest conversations there is. “Brighter than the Storm,” written by mental health advocate Melissa S. Johnson, Ph.D., of Just Write Consulting, is aimed at readers ages 8 to 12 and follows an 8-year-old girl whose mother struggles with mental health challenges.
The book includes a Feelings Weather Chart, a kid-friendly way to name and express emotions, along with practical conversation starters for parents and caregivers. Johnson was inspired by children affected when an adult in their family is struggling, and her goal is to reduce stigma while showing families that hope and healing are possible. The book is aligned with NAMI mental health awareness frameworks for children and families.
For a region where so many households include grandparents raising grandkids or extended family under one roof, a resource like this can be a quiet lifeline. It belongs in school libraries, counseling offices, and on nightstands next to the tissues.
