The statistics around domestic violence can feel abstract. The sixth annual All Shades of Purple Gala, set for Saturday, Oct. 17 in Sarasota, makes them personal. Hosted by Queens of Domestic Violence Awareness Inc., the evening brings together dinner, dancing, live music from saxophonist Merlin, and a silent auction. The proceeds go toward something practical and urgent: emergency hotel rooms and support resources for survivors.
Founder Rhonda Calahan built the nonprofit from her own experience. When she tried to end a relationship with an ex-partner, he attacked her and stabbed her 30 times. She survived, and she now uses that story to reach others. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the gala doubles as a reminder that leaving an abusive relationship is often the most dangerous point. Co-host Tyler Butler, host of Out & About with Tyler, says the funds primarily cover hotel stays for women who need a safe place to go immediately.
Two survivors will speak at the event, including one who once lived in her car with four children. Tickets are available at queensofdva.org, with a buy-one-get-one promotion using code ABC7.
