The license plates are changing, the reservations are coming in, and businesses from Tampa Bay through Naples are hiring and stocking up. Snowbird season is almost here, and after a summer of empty tables, thin foot traffic and rising costs, it can’t arrive soon enough for the Suncoast’s locally owned restaurants, shops, hotels, charter captains and entertainment venues.
The stakes are bigger than one good season. Tourism is Sarasota County’s top industry, with about 2.71 million visitors in fiscal 2025 spending more than $2.3 billion and supporting roughly 21,200 jobs. Lee County welcomed about 3.32 million visitors in 2025, generating over $3.3 billion in direct spending and more than 31,000 jobs. For small independent owners, the slow summer months can be the difference between survival and permanent closure, which is why the winter crowds matter so much.
There’s plenty you can do right now, whether you live here year-round or just winter here. Eat at a local independent restaurant, shop the small storefronts, hire a local charter captain, leave positive reviews, and tip generously. Many snowbirds have been coming back to the same businesses for decades, and that loyalty, plus the support of year-round locals, is what keeps the Suncoast’s economy humming. So here’s a question worth answering: what’s the one local business you’d be heartbroken to lose?
