On March 27, a fatal collision on Interstate 75 at Mile Marker 153 in Charlotte County claimed the lives of three people, including two young children. The crash occurred when a 2014 Jeep Wrangler driven by 28-year-old Ryan Richard Mowdy crossed the grass median into the path of a 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe. According to the Florida Highway Patrol Traffic Homicide Unit investigation, Mowdy was under the influence of marijuana at the time of the collision. The impact was devastating and immediately claimed the lives of the occupants in the Hyundai.
What happened in the moments after the crash has added another troubling dimension to this tragedy. Instead of attempting to render aid or contact emergency services, Mowdy removed a small black container from his vehicle and discarded it into a wooded area. Troopers later recovered the container and confirmed it contained marijuana. This attempt to destroy evidence compounds the legal consequences Mowdy now faces. He has been arrested and charged with three counts of DUI manslaughter, three counts of vehicular homicide, evidence destruction, and marijuana possession. He is currently being held in the Charlotte County Jail.
