President Trump announced over the weekend that he’s creating an “AI Force” and appointing an “AI czar” to oversee artificial intelligence. The post got plenty of attention, but it came with almost no details: no name for the czar, no mission statement for the force, and no timeline. Trump did make one thing clear, saying he won’t “stifle” the AI industry and that we will “cherish it, help it, and watch over it, as it grows.”
The announcement lands in the middle of a growing debate in Washington. Researchers have warned that AI could pose existential risks by the end of the decade, and Democrats like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer are calling for Congress to pass real regulations. Some Republicans, including Senator Tim Sheehy of Montana, welcomed the President’s move. The Electronic Frontier Foundation offered a different take, warning that too much attention goes to doomsday scenarios while real harms, like scams, deepfakes, and privacy violations, go unaddressed.
