Walter Koenig, the actor who brought Ensign Pavel Chekov to life on the original Star Trek series, died Sunday night at 90. TMZ first reported the news, and Galactic Productions said he passed of old age at a home in North Hollywood, surrounded by his daughter and niece.
For Suncoast fans, Koenig’s convention appearances were often the closest connection to Trek history. He was a fixture on the Florida convention circuit, and the tributes described his kindness and wit with fans as part of a legacy that extended far beyond the screen. The company’s statement closed with a fitting sendoff: “Thank you, Walter, for the memories, the inspiration, and for boldly going where few have gone before.”
Koenig’s final year on Earth included a genuine milestone. He won the Platinum Award for Best Actor at the 2026 Independent Shorts Award for the short film Mr. Fleischmann, proof that his talent wasn’t stuck in reruns. Did you ever meet Koenig at a convention, or is there a Chekov moment you still quote? Tell us in the comments.
