A Fairmont, West Virginia woman is recovering after police say she was attacked while retrieving her belongings from a home she once shared with 50-year-old Benjamin Mayfield. According to court documents, Mayfield grabbed a bread knife, placed her in a chokehold, and cut her throat during an argument on Sunday. She suffered a severe laceration to her neck and cuts to her left hand while defending herself, escaped the home, and was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital. Mayfield is charged with attempted murder and is being held at North Central Regional Jail on $1 million bond.

The details are disturbing, but the moment that led to them is painfully common. Returning to a shared home to collect clothes, documents, or children’s items is one of the most dangerous points in any separation. Victims are often most at risk in the period right after leaving, and a routine trip for personal belongings can turn into a confrontation with someone who knows the layout of the house, the schedule, and exactly when to be there.

Here on the Suncoast, help is available and closer than most people think. In Sarasota and Manatee counties, local domestic violence agencies offer safety planning, and law enforcement can provide a civil standby so a deputy is present while you collect your things. If you or someone you know is planning that trip, bring a friend, tell someone where you’re going, and know that asking for backup is not overreacting. What would make you feel safer walking back into that house, a friend in the car or a deputy in the driveway?
