A Randolph County, West Virginia woman is facing a child abuse charge after allegedly striking her 7-year-old stepdaughter with a belt. MaCayla Johnson, 24, told deputies she was overwhelmed and took the child into the bathroom, where she hit her twice, according to authorities. The girl was later found with bruising on her arms, hand, and lower back. Johnson is being held at Tygart Valley Regional Jail on $2,000 cash bond.
The case came to light through the child’s father, who contacted the school and said the punishment “went too far” before teachers had noticed anything. Johnson reportedly admitted to investigators that she felt during the incident that she was crossing a line. The sheriff’s office is handling the case.
