A grand jury in Tennessee has indicted Chadrick “Chad” Mundy, owner of Mundy Funeral Home in Jamestown, on 52 counts including theft, fraudulent insurance acts, financial exploitation of an elderly or vulnerable adult, and abuse of a corpse. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation launched the case in May, and state regulators suspended the licenses for both Mundy and the funeral home in August after an audit found missing documentation. Investigators say he filed fraudulent life insurance death claims for people who were still alive, including his own wife. He was arrested Wednesday and booked on an $80,000 bond.
The case is a striking example of how much trust we place in funeral homes, often during the most vulnerable moments of our lives. Here on the Suncoast, where so many residents are retirees or snowbirds making end-of-life plans far from their hometowns, that trust carries extra weight.
