Venice Police have arrested two men from Texas after a violent home invasion late on Sept. 23 in the 3000 block of Laurel Road East. Investigators say Justin Mitchell and Brevaun Williams, both 34, forced entry through the front door, restrained and assaulted the homeowner, demanded cash, and stole a handgun from the residence. When the homeowner contacted a family member, that person arrived and one suspect fired the stolen gun in their direction. The family member was not struck.
Both suspects fled on foot, and a perimeter search involving Venice Police and Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office K-9 units ended with both men in custody, one found hiding in nearby bushes and the other located after a K-9 bite. Venice Police K-9 Palmer recovered the stolen firearm, which is now secured as evidence. Both suspects were evaluated for medical treatment and booked into the Sarasota County Jail on charges including home invasion robbery, kidnapping, armed burglary, and aggravated assault.
Police describe the incident as targeted, noting the parties did not know each other, and say there is no known ongoing threat. However, investigators are still searching for a possible third suspect who may have been a getaway driver and left the area. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Venice Police.
