Venice police are asking riders to answer one question before their next trip: is your e-bike actually an e-bike? Under Florida law, a legal e-bike must have working pedals and a motor rated under 750 watts. Anything beyond that can be classified as a motorcycle, which requires a valid driver’s license. E-bikes don’t require a license, but riders on either type of vehicle still have to follow the same traffic rules as everyone else on the road.
The department says it’s seeing more e-bikes and e-motos around town. Older residents are using e-bikes to get out of the house and stay active, while younger riders are drawn to the speed of e-motos. The confusion tends to show up after a stop, when a rider learns their vehicle isn’t in the category they assumed. On top of state rules, local governments can add their own restrictions, and Venice already bans bikes on the sidewalks along Venice, Tampa and Miami avenues downtown.
