A Palmetto woman is facing five felony charges after Sarasota Police accused her of draining nearly $65,000 from a jailed acquaintance’s bank accounts and credit cards. Jessica Elizabeth McVay, 48, was arrested Sept. 23 following an investigation into transactions made between November 2025 and July 2026, while the victim was incarcerated at the Manatee County Jail.
According to police, McVay knew the victim through her job as a Veterans Affairs coordinator for the Public Defender’s Office in the 12th Judicial Circuit. The victim told investigators that McVay was helping handle her affairs while she was in jail. Records allegedly show $17,000 sent to McVay through 12 Zelle transfers, $16,000 withdrawn from Palmetto ATMs, and payments made to McVay’s own credit cards. The total estimated loss: $64,923.85.
Investigators say a power-of-attorney document signed in July did not authorize McVay to use the victim’s money for personal gain.
