A Palmetto woman who worked as a veteran’s affairs coordinator at the public defender’s office is accused of stealing roughly $65,000 from a veteran who was incarcerated in the Manatee County jail. Jessica McVay, 48, was arrested Sept. 23 and faces multiple felony charges, including grand theft and scheme to defraud.
According to Sarasota Police, the victim asked McVay to manage her bills and credit cards while she was in jail. Instead, investigators say McVay opened new credit cards, accessed bank accounts, and transferred money into her own account. In July 2026, McVay allegedly had the victim sign a power of attorney at the jail, claiming it was needed to hire an attorney. No attorney was ever hired. The victim discovered the unauthorized activity after her release on Aug. 13 and reported it on Aug. 18.
Police believe McVay may have had contact with other veterans in the community and are encouraging family members to start a conversation with veteran loved ones who worked with this coordinator at the public defender’s office.
