One person was killed and two others were injured when gunfire broke out at First Friday in downtown Las Vegas on Friday night, Oct. 2. Police officers in the area of South Main Street and West Charleston Boulevard heard shots around 10:17 p.m. and found three gunshot victims, all of whom were taken to a hospital. One died there, while the two survivors are expected to recover from non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators say a physical altercation between several people preceded the shooting. An unknown male pulled a firearm and fired into the crowd, then fled before officers arrived, and detectives are still searching for him. The First Friday Foundation said it is heartbroken and will address future events before making any announcements, while the Arts District Neighborhood Association and Mayor Pro Tem Olivia Diaz offered condolences to everyone affected.
For communities here on the Suncoast, where art walks, seafood festivals, and street fairs fill the calendar nearly year-round, the news raises a question that never gets easier. Big open events are free and open on purpose, and that openness is what people love about them. Balancing that with real safety planning is the part no one wants to think about until they have to. Have you ever thought about what you’d do if trouble broke out at a local festival?
