A Saturday at home turned fatal in Sweet Home, Oregon, when 54-year-old Robert Church was killed by a bullet that passed through his house. The Linn County Sheriff’s Office believes the shot came from a nearby hunter. Deputies located a partially dressed deer near where the shots were fired, and the hunter left the scene before anyone could speak with them. Investigators say the shooting does not appear intentional.
Church leaves behind five children. His daughter Shy remembered him simply: “He was one of a kind. He loved his children more than anything in the world.” The sheriff’s office is asking the hunter to come forward, not to assign blame, but because the family deserves to know what happened that day.
For communities where hunting land sits close to homes, this story raises hard questions about backdrop awareness, property lines, and accountability when a shot travels farther than intended. Florida’s own hunting seasons and rural edges make it a conversation worth having here on the Suncoast too. What do you think hunters owe a community when something goes wrong?
