South Carolina Ends SNAP Soda and Candy Purchases: Could Florida Be Next?

A new USDA-approved waiver has changed what food stamp benefits can buy in South Carolina. Under the Health Food SC Project, SNAP recipients in that state can no longer purchase most candy, soda, energy drinks, or sweetened beverages. Diet and zero-sugar soft drinks remain eligible, and all SNAP-approved retailers must participate with no opt-out for households. Governor Henry McMaster directed the state to request the waiver back in September.

The policy is a big shift for grocery retailers and the millions of SNAP households nationwide affected by what benefits cover. Supporters frame it as a public health measure aimed at reducing sugar consumption; critics argue it limits personal choice and creates confusion at checkout. Either way, it’s a test case other states are likely to study closely.

For Suncoast listeners, the question is whether Florida could pursue something similar. We’ve got plenty of families who rely on benefits and plenty of retirees watching grocery budgets. What do you think: should Florida follow South Carolina’s lead and restrict sugary purchases on SNAP, or should recipients keep full choice?
