A new WalletHub survey puts a spotlight on a contradiction most of us recognize: nearly nine in 10 Americans say new phones are overpriced, yet more than one in three say taking on credit card debt for the latest model is worth it. Even stranger, nearly half of respondents admit they’d feel inferior using a budget cell phone plan, and 32% believe someone who always has the latest iPhone must be rich.
WalletHub managing editor John Kiernan says the results reflect the phone’s role as a status symbol. Keeping up appearances and presenting a certain image drives a lot of these choices, even when the math says otherwise. Paying interest on a device that loses value quickly is one of the more expensive ways to look successful.
The practical fix is straightforward. Compare plans across carriers before you commit, consider last year’s model, and ask what a switch might bundle in, like a new phone and other devices. Here on the Suncoast, where plenty of households are on fixed incomes, saving a few hundred dollars on a phone can mean more beach days and fewer bills. What’s the oldest phone you’ve ever kept in service?
