A minor crash on a North Port roadway escalated into a deadly chain of events this week, and dashcam footage is now showing just how quickly it unfolded. It began when a truck rear-ended a vehicle, and the truck driver stepped out to assess the damage. A Honda Civic driver swerved into the emergency lane to get around the stopped vehicles, struck the truck driver, and kept going into a scene nobody could have predicted. The man was hospitalized in critical condition and later died.
A North Port police officer arrived and positioned his cruiser across the lanes to protect the scene. A fifth vehicle then plowed into the parked cruiser, totaling it. The officer and other drivers escaped injury. The Florida Highway Patrol is treating each collision separately, and charges are pending against the driver who hit the cruiser. Trooper Kenn Watson told reporters the tragedy is a reminder for drivers to stay vigilant, and that the incident could have been avoided if more eyes had been focused on the road.
For Suncoast drivers, the takeaway is straightforward. Florida’s move-over law requires drivers to shift a lane away from stopped emergency vehicles when it’s safe, or slow to 20 miles per hour below the speed limit when they can’t. That law exists because people are standing on the shoulder with their backs to traffic, whether they’re troopers, tow operators, or a driver checking a dented bumper. A few seconds of attention is all it takes.
