A St. Petersburg sanitation technician was fatally shot inside her work vehicle Wednesday afternoon, marking a tragic loss for the city and a stark reminder of the dangers faced by essential workers. The 47-year-old victim, a twelve-year city employee, was shot in the 4100 block of 12th Avenue South shortly after noon while sitting in her front-loader truck. Police identified the suspect as Ladavion King, also 47, and described the incident as a targeted attack between two people who knew each other. Investigators have not yet disclosed a motive for the shooting.
The suspect fled the scene heading south and was tracked by Florida Highway Patrol troopers and Lee County sheriff’s deputies on Interstate 75. During a traffic stop in Lee County, King barricaded himself in his vehicle before being apprehended. No law enforcement officers were injured during the pursuit or arrest. King sustained serious injuries and is currently hospitalized and in custody of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the use of control during the arrest process.
