A 1-year-old boy died Friday afternoon after he was struck by a vehicle on a roadway in the Jonesville area, according to Florida Highway Patrol troopers. The child’s family was doing yard work at their home when he wandered off. His parents checked the spots he usually goes but didn’t find him before he reached the road. Troopers said the driver did not see the toddler and struck him. He was taken to the hospital, where he died.
Officials said charges are not expected against either the parents or the driver. The statement from troopers makes clear this was investigated as a terrible accident, not a case of neglect: the family was home, they were working outside, and they went looking for him. That’s a scenario countless Suncoast families know well, especially during yard work season, which around here runs just about year-round.
If there’s anything worth taking from a story like this, it’s a five-minute safety check. Walk the fence line. Test the gate latches. Make sure someone has eyes on the little ones whenever the mower or the trimmer comes out. Our thoughts are with the family in Jonesville. What safety steps do you take at home with young kids around? Share them in the comments, and maybe your habit helps another family this week.
