Two Dead, Dozens Injured After Gunfire at Georgia Homecoming Party

A homecoming celebration in Vienna, Georgia, home to roughly a few thousand people, was interrupted by gunfire early Sunday morning. Officials say more than a thousand people had gathered for the party, and deputies were on scene monitoring the crowd when shots were fired around 1:15 a.m. Two men, ages 20 and 23, were killed. Twenty-five people were taken to hospitals, and Sheriff Craig Peavy told reporters the total number of injured could reach 35.

Investigators believe shots were fired at two locations about a block apart, with at least 50 people caught in the line of fire. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting local authorities, and while the victims’ families have been notified, the men’s names have not been made public.

For communities like ours here on the Suncoast, where spring training crowds and waterfront festivals draw large gatherings year-round, the story raises familiar questions about keeping public events safe. Our thoughts are with the families in Vienna, and with a small town navigating a morning nobody expected.
