A late-night argument at a home on Lahaina Drive in Sarasota ended with one man in emergency surgery and a 19-year-old facing an attempted second-degree murder charge. According to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office affidavit, deputies responded around 11:06 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, and found the victim unconscious and bleeding heavily. Deputies performed CPR and applied a tourniquet before he was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. He had not regained consciousness when the affidavit was written but was expected to survive.
Records say Yordi David Lopez Fuentes and the victim argued, then struck each other with belts. A woman at the home told deputies that Lopez Fuentes searched the kitchen drawers, threatened to kill the victim, and was later seen holding a knife while the victim bled. When deputies ordered Lopez Fuentes to leave the home, he refused, and he was taken into custody with the help of pepper-ball rounds and a police dog.
The charge is an accusation, and Lopez Fuentes is presumed innocent unless and until a court finds otherwise. The case now moves into the legal process, while the victim begins what is likely a long recovery. For a residential street on the Suncoast, it’s a reminder of how quickly a household dispute can turn into something no one can undo.
