Amphicars Drive Off the Road and Into the Lake at Ohio Meetup, and We Want One for Sarasota Bay

A group of Amphicar owners gathered at Put-in-Bay, Ohio, this week to do the thing their cars do best: trade pavement for open water. The Amphicar was built in Germany between 1961 and 1968, and each one needs its land and water drive systems working in sync to pull off the trick. A fully functional model is a genuine feat of engineering, which is why owners treat a working Amphicar like a piece of rolling, floating history.

Here’s the wild part. Owners say these vintage oddities draw bigger crowds at car shows than Lamborghinis or Mustangs. That makes sense when you think about it. A sports car is impressive, but it just sits there. An Amphicar creates a moment. It looks like a car, then it drives into the lake, and every single person in the crowd follows it to the water’s edge.

Living here on the Suncoast, this one lands a little differently. We’re surrounded by water. The bay, the Gulf, the canals and rivers that define so many of our neighborhoods. A car that could roll off the road and straight into the bay would be the ultimate local flex. So tell us: if you had one, where would you launch it first?
